Charlottesville is located in west Central Virginia, approximately 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles northwest of Richmond. Home to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville comprises a little over 10 square miles. The population of nearly 44,000 grows to 120,000 when combined with Albemarle County.
Culturally, Charlottesville offers a varied arts, music and epicurean experience. The Downtown Mall, a pedestrian mall, is host to restaurants, art galleries, shops, theaters (including the remodeled Paramount Theater), music venues and the Ntelos Wireless Pavilion which offers free music every Friday throughout the summer. Annually, Charlottesville is host to The Virginia Film Festival, Virginia Festival of the Book and the Charlottesville Festival of the Book.
